The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award recognizes an NFL player for his excellence on and off the field. The award was established in 1970. It was renamed in 1999 after the late Hall of Fame Chicago Bears running back, Walter Payton. This year, the Kansas City Chiefs selected Tyrann Mathieu as their nominee who has had a significant positive impact on his community.

On Thursday, the Tyrann Mathieu Foundation was awarded a
$5,000 grant from the NFL Foundation as part of the NFL’s initiative to help
players get more involved in social causes within their community. The grant
funding will support of the Tyrann Mathieu Foundation’s educational programs
for inner-city youth in Houston and Mathieu’s home city of New Orleans.
